              Nestlings

Nestlings will start to feather out at the end of the third week. keep an eye on the crop (a sack below the throat) during this time to make sure the hen is feeding the chicks properly. The crop in the early days will be almost transparent so seeing if it's full is no problem.

Young fischer's leave the nest around 5 to 6 weeks of age. By then the hen has often started a second brood, but the cock bird continues to feed the young and will teach them to eat regular seed. Always supply soft food until the young are completely independent, which takes about 2 weeks more. At this point I remove the young from the aviary and put them in a flight cage. The last thing you want is the young birds to receive an injury from their parents when returning to the nest box they called home for so long.
